Hooked

       At the end of the seventeenth century handbills circulated in the Caribbean advertising New York as the perfect place for pirates to find refug0e and do business. Its most eminent citizen, Peter Stuyvesant, made his fortune by building and hiring out ships for piracy.
       Three hundred years later, in the nineteen fifties, it was the richest port in the world. Seventy ships arrived or departed every day of the year. Forty thousand dock workers, in teams of twenty or thirty, worked for several days to unload one ship.

Then it all changed.
