2009 SUMMER ARTS WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS

Intensive Painting Class

Instructor: Alexander Bocchialini Shundi

Day/Time:  Tuesdays from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Dates:  8 weeks – June 9th – July 28th
Fee:  $535, Members $500

Description:  This class will explore the human condition through individual development of ideas with discussions on formation of concept, approaches and materials.  The class is designed for both advanced and beginning students regardless of disciplines chosen: landscape, figure, still life, abstract, etc.  Students should bring whatever medium is preferred, an easel, if possible, and whatever previous work they would like to discuss and present.

Alex Shundi received his BFA and MFA from Yale University. He has since taught at WCAC, SUNY at Purchase, University of Bridgeport, and Silvermine College. He shows nationally and internationally and currently exhibits at New Art Gallery in Litchfield, CT.


Discover the Actor Inside:
An Introduction to Acting

Instructor:  Lora Lee Ecobelli

Day/Time:  Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30 pm
Dates:  8 weeks – June 9th – July 28th
Fee:  $240, $230 members

This class is the first step to building a solid foundation in the art of acting. By using theatre games and improvisation, students will learn basic theatre skills in a supportive, creative and fun environment.  In addition, there will be further development of the actor's physical resources of voice and movement, concentration and working as a unit. Scene study will be explored using classic works by playwrights such as Shakespeare, The Greeks, Miller, O’Neal, Chekhov, Williams, Albee and others. Rehearsal with a scene partner outside of class is required. The class will culminate in a scene night open to the public.

Lora Lee Ecobelli has performed in numerous Broadway & off-Broadway, television and film productions.  She is also a singer-songwriter and the Co-Artistic Director of Blue Horse Repertory Company.


Life Drawing

Day/Time:  Wednesdays from 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Dates:  6 weeks – July 8, July 15, July 22, Aug 5, Aug 12, Aug 17
Fee:  $75, Members $60

Description:  As an exercise in drawing the human body, life drawing is offered by Arts on the Lake for students and artists of any ability who wish to work without instruction to improve sketching skills using a live model. There will be poses of varying lengths. Sculptor Michael Keropian will act as class monitor. Participants must bring their own materials. Easels are available. Teens 16 and above may participate with written permission from a parent.


Tai-Chi Chuan

Instructor: Sifu David Wong Yee, D. Ac

Day/Time: Saturdays from 9:30 am – 11:00 am; Mondays from 8:00 – 9:30 pm
Dates:  Ongoing
Fee:  $100 per 6 weeks, $90 for members

Description:  Enjoy the mental, physical, spiritual and self-defense benefits offered through the traditional Chinese art of Tai-Chi Chuan as facilitated by a true practioner of the Chinese Martial Arts.  Sifu David Wong Yee has studied and practiced the Chinese Martial Arts for over 30 years.  Whether you are a seasoned Martial Artist or a novice interested in discovering the advantages offered by the ancient art, this class offers a placid and comfortable, and inviting atmosphere, in which to accomplish your particular training objectives.


Painting:  The Realm of Organic Abstraction

Instructor:  Susan Ferri

Day/Time:  Monday- Friday, 10 am – 4 pm

Dates:  1 week – July 27th-July 31st

Fee:  $450, $430 members

This course is designed for students who wish to delve into the physical and practical as well as conceptual aspects of abstract painting. Students will explore the fundamental structures of nature through an intense focus on line, form, shape, color, texture, temperature, and atmosphere. Special attention will be given to the idea of organic life cycles and the concepts of birth, death, fertility, decomposition and regeneration. Individuals will be encouraged to develop their own visual “language” with which to express the complexities of these relationships through painting. In depth class discussions will be an important part of this process. The works of Masson, Arp, Dubuffet, Hesse, Bourgeois, Winters, and others will serve as guides. All painting mediums and formats are welcome.

Susan Ferri is a visiting artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her BA from St. John’s College and her MFA from Santa Fe International Academy of Art. She also received training at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and The Santa Fe Art Institute. She exhibits her work nationally and teaches both on the East Coast and in Santa Fe, NM.

Arts on the Lake Instructors

John Arrucci is a composer and percussionist who has taught at Princeton for 22 years. He has received numerous honors and grants and his work is featured on over 50 recordings. His compositions have been performed around the world, and he has been commissioned by members of the New York Philharmonic, the Manhattan Marimba Quartet and a notable list of other patrons.

Bart Cook was invited to the School of American Ballet by George Balanchine. He joined New York City Ballet in 1971, becoming a principal in 1979. In 1981 he became assistant ballet master. In 1993 he began work for Jerome Robbins Right Trust, staging Balanchine's ballets.

Alan Devenish is a poet whose work has appeared in Poetry Northwest, College English, The Little Magazine as well as many others. He gives workshops at Bard and teaches at W.C.C.

Lora Lee Ecobelli’s Broadway & Off-Broadway credits include: A Christmas Carol, A Midsummer Nights Dream, The Trojan Woman, Antigone, Aurora Leigh, Hester Prynee at Death, Fire Exit, The Vise (Clurman award for best leading actress) Regional: The Three Sisters, The Seagull, Our Town, A Street Car Named Desire, Spoon River Anthology, Wencleslas Square, Talking With. Television: Elmoplooza, Comedy Central, Upright Citizens Brigade Film: Judy Berlin, Guest Of Honor, Jimmy’s Cafe. In addition, Lora Lee is a writer and singer-songwriter and the Co-Artistic Director of Blue Horse Repertory Company.

She also received training at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and The Santa Fe Art Institute. She exhibits her work nationally and teaches both on the East Coast and in Santa Fe, NM.

Michael Keropian graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He is a professional sculptor and has created numerous sculpture works for both private and public locations. In 2000, he created nine heroic-size tigers for the new stadium of the Detroit Tigers, Comerica Park. He created a portrait of former Brewster Mayor John Cesar, and is currently working on a monumental tribute to Sachem Daniel Nimham. Mr. Keropian teaches drawing and sculpture at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in NYC and at the Art Life Studio in Portchester, NY.

Elizabeth Lauri is an artist/instructor who has been teaching children and adults for the past 20 years and challenging her students to work with all types of materials

Alex Shundi received his BFA and MFA from Yale University. He also received training at the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris and the Accademia Di Belle Arti Di Brera in Milan. He has since taught at WCAC, SUNY at Purchase, University of Bridgeport, and Silvermine College. He originated and was Dean of the La Coste-Silvermine School of Art in Provence, France as well as The Arts Work Forum in Millerton. He served as the Dean of Painting at Santa Fe International Academy of Art where he was also a professor of art. He shows internationally and currently exhibits at New Art Gallery in Litchfield, CT.

Mary Schreiber has worked with young children for over 20 years and holds a M.S. in Education from Bank Street College. She has taught Child Development and related courses at Columbia Teachers College, NYU and Westchester Community College.
