Classes For Adults and Teens

Intensive Painting Class

Instructor: Alexander Bocchialini Shundi
Day/Time: Tuesdays from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Dates: 8 weeks – June 3rd – July 22nd
Fee: $535, $500 members
Description: This class will explore the human condition through individual development of ideas with discussions on formation of concept, approaches and materials. The class is designed for both advanced and beginning students regardless of disciplines chosen: landscape, figure, still life, abstract, etc. Students should bring whatever medium is preferred, an easel, if possible, and whatever previous work they would like to discuss and present.


Figure Painting and Drawing

Instructor: Alexander Bocchialini Shundi
Day/Time: Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30 pm
Dates: 8 weeks – June 3rd – July 22nd
Fee: $335, $315 members (includes model fee)
Description: In this class we will explore the figure as principal subject. Portraiture, anatomy, texture, compositional placement, gesture, and expression will be studied, with emphasis on drawing, and color. The class will also study the figure in Art History, and various methods of psychological approach to its placement on the canvas. The class will have a live model.

Alex Shundi received his BFA and MFA from Yale University. He also received training at the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris and the Accademia Di Belle Arti Di Brera in Milan. He has since taught at WCAC, SUNY at Purchase, University of Bridgeport, and Silvermine College. He originated and was Dean of the La Coste-Silvermine School of Art in Provence, France as well as The Arts Work Forum in Millerton. He served as the Dean of Painting at Santa Fe International Academy of Art where he was also a professor of art. He shows internationally and currently exhibits at New Art Gallery in Litchfield, CT.

 

Finding Center/Finding Balance:

Mandala Workshop for Women
Instructor: Rosemarie Rogers
Thursdays 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Dates: 4 weeks – June 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th
Ages: High School and above
Fee: $100, members $90, includes materials
Description: In Sanskrit, Mandala means sacred circle. Finding a quiet time to listen and reflect in a busy life is often a challenge, particularly for women. Yet when we do take the time to make the journey within ourselves, we can rediscover who we are, our purpose and intent. This introductory workshop will use art making in the form of Mandala (circle) drawing to provide women an opportunity for centering, self-discovery, and balance. No prior art experience is necessary.

Rosemarie Rogers is a board certified and New York State licensed art therapist. She currently works with veterans at the Hudson Valley VA and is working with other clinicians to develop a treatment program for returning female soldiers. She has a private practice in Carmel, New York where she works with children, adolescents and adults.


Creative Writing & Acting for Seniors

Instructor: Peggity Price
Day/Time: Thursdays from 1:00 -3:00 pm
Dates: 6 weeks – June 5th – July 10th
Fee: $150, $140 members
This is a creative writing course dealing with the issues of our senior citizens, i.e. (hopes, dreams, health, regrets, humor and politics). Students are expected to write and bring in each week 10 minutes of short material to be read by fellow classmates with the goal of having a completed piece by the end of the six weeks, to be performed by the class for audience.

Peggity Price is co-founder and artistic director of the Blue Horse Repertory Company. She has worked extensively in television and stage, both on and off-Broadway and in regional theatres for over 30 years. As head of the apprentice/intern program at the Barter Theatre, she both directed and taught acting and movement classes. She has directed and coached at the Actors Theatre of Louisville particularly for the apprentice showcases during the renowned Humana New Play Festival. She has led workshops at Florida State University as well as for the Southeastern Theatre Conference. Ms. Price coaches privately for actors and public speakers.


Discover the Actor Inside:  An Introduction to Acting

Instructor: Lora Lee Ecobelli
Day/Time: Wednesdays from 7:30-9:30 pm
Dates: 8 weeks – June 4th – July 23rd
Fee: $240, $230 members

This class is the first step to building a solid foundation in the art of acting. By using theatre games and improvisation, students will learn basic theatre skills in a supportive, creative and fun environment. In addition, there will be further development of the actor's physical resources of voice and movement, concentration and working as a unit. Scene study will be explored using classic works by playwrights such as Shakespeare, The Greeks, Miller, O’Neal, Chekov, Williams, Albee and others. Students will track a character's journey through a scene and learn to further articulate the essential elements of characterization. Rehearsal with a scene partner outside of class is required. The class will culminate in a scene night open to the public.

Lora Lee Ecobelli’s Broadway& Off-Broadway credits include: A Christmas Carol, A Midsummer Nights Dream, The Trojan Woman, Antigone, Aurora Leigh, Hester Prynee at Death, Fire Exit, The Vise (Clurman award for best leading actress) Regional: The Three Sisters, The Seagull, Our Town, A Street Car Named Desire, Spoon River Anthology, Wencleslas Square, Talking With. Television: Elmoplooza, Comedy Central, Upright Citizens Brigade Film: Judy Berlin, Guest Of Honor, Jimmy’s Cafe. In addition, Lora Lee is a writer and singer-songwriter and the Co-Artistic Director of Blue Horse Repertory Company.

Landscape Painting: Alla Prima

Instructor: Susan Ferri
Day/Time: Monday-Friday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Dates: 1 Week – September 8th – 12th
Fee: $400, $380 members
Painting on location, this course will focus on the spontaneous and fluid approach to oil painting known as “Alla Prima”. While students will study the fundamental elements that compose a landscape: atmosphere, form, light, space, texture, and time, a special emphasis will be given to the lyrical magic of paint. We will explore movement and rhythm in the landscape, and the concept of color as temperature and emotion. Techniques for “wet on wet” painting will be discussed, as well as mediums and materials.

Susan Ferri is a visiting artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her BA from St. John’s College and her MFA from Santa Fe International Academy of Art. She also received training at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and The Santa Fe Art Institute. She exhibits her work nationally and teaches both on the East Coast and in Santa Fe, NM.

Tai-Chi Chuan

Instructor: Sifu David Wong Yee, D. Ac
Day/Time: Saturdays from 9:30 am – 11:00 am;
Mondays from 8:00 – 9:30

Fee: $80 per 4 weeks, $70 members,
$150 for 8 weeks, $140 members
Description: Enjoy the mental, physical, spiritual and self-defense benefits offered through the traditional Chinese art of Tai-Chi Chuan as facilitated by a true practioner of the Chinese Martial Arts. Sifu David Wong Yee has studied and practiced the Chinese Martial Arts for over 30 years. Whether you are a seasoned Martial Artist or a novice interested in discovering the advantages offered by the ancient art, this class offers a placid, comfortable, and inviting atmosphere, in which to accomplish your particular training objectives.


Classes for Children

 

Nature’s Studio

Instructor: Mary Schreiber
Day/Time: One Week, 9:30 – 11:30 am
Dates: July 21st – 25th
Ages: Entering K- 4th Grade
Fee: $130, Members, $120 (fee includes materials)
Description: Art materials are everywhere in the natural world: wood, pinecones, moss, clay, stones, sand, flowers, feathers, and leaves. Children in this class will explore and discover the resources readily available outdoors, and then use them to create beautiful, natural artwork. We will emphasize respecting nature (for example, we will not strip bark off growing trees!) and being aware and careful of our use of natural resources. This is a “drop-off” class.
All participants should wear comfortable clothes and children will need a smock.

 

Budding Artists/Mommy and Me

(for preschoolers and their adult)
Instructor: Mary Schreiber
Day/Time: One Week, 10:00 – 11:30 am
Dates: July 14-15, 17-18 (no Wednesday session)
Ages: 3-5 and their adult
Fee: $75, Members, $70, Drop in daily fee, $20 (fee includes materials)
Description: Art materials are everywhere in the natural world: wood, pinecones, moss, clay, stones, sand, flowers, feathers, and leaves. Children in this class will explore and discover the resources readily available outdoors, and then use them to create beautiful, natural artwork using an open-ended and process-oriented approach. We will emphasize respecting nature (for example, we will not strip bark off growing trees!) and being aware and careful of our use of natural resources. Each session will also include an appropriately themed book.
All participants should wear comfortable clothes and children will need
a smock.

Mary Schreiber has worked with young children for over 20 years and holds a M.A. in Education from Bank Street College of Education. She consults as a Teacher Trainer and has taught Child Development and related courses at Columbia Teachers College, NYU and Westchester Community College. She is a working artist, involved in multi-media art and ceramics.
